It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Walter C. Skidmore Jr., who departed this life on December 15, 2024, at the age of 82. Born on September 13, 1942, to the late Walter C. Skidmore Sr. and Mary Skidmore (née Dyer). Walter is also mourned by his father’s surviving spouse Margaret. Walter was a man of unwavering dedication to his family, community, and service.
Walter was predeceased by his beloved wife, Rae Ann, who passed away in February 2004. He was the devoted father of Christine and son in law Francis Sullivan, Scott and Daughter in law Michelle (née Chlystun) and the proud grandfather—affectionately known as “Pop Pop”—to Maurinne Sullivan, Daniel Sullivan and his soon to be wife Andrea Menjivar, Alexandra, Dakota, and Jason. Walter was the cherished brother of Margaret (predeceased), Regina and late brother-in-law Clifford Westerlund and brother-in-law, Michael Onufrak. Maureen and brother-in-law Richard Washington, and sister Melissa Skidmore. Beloved brother-in-law to 18 and uncle “Wal” to 54 nieces and nephews, as well as great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews. all of whom held him in the highest regard.
A man of honor and service, Walter was a dedicated member of the Selden Fire Department for an extraordinary 66 years. His steadfast commitment to the department and to the safety and well-being of his community was both admirable and inspirational. Through his years of service, Walter earned the respect and gratitude of all who had the privilege of serving alongside him.
Walter’s life was defined by his integrity, loyalty, and love for those he held dear. His presence brought warmth and comfort to all who knew him, and his legacy of service, kindness, and devotion will endure for generations.
