It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Sean David Worrell, who left us
on March 17, 2026, at the age of 66, surrounded by his family. Sean was a dedicated
public servant who spent his life protecting others, often wearing two hats
simultaneously-as a beloved Volunteer Fire Chief and a decorated Sergeant
Investigator for the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office.
Born on October 28, 1959, in Brooklyn, NY, to David and Kathleen Worrell, Sean
developed a passion for service early in life. He joined the Selden Fire Department in
1978 as a young volunteer, rising through the ranks to serve as Fire Chief for 8 years.
Simultaneously, Sean built a distinguished 35-year career with the Suffolk County
Sheriff’s Office. Starting as a Corrections Officer and ultimately retired as a
Commanding Officer of Personnel Investigations Bureau as a Sergeant Investigator, he
was known for his dedication to justice and his compassionate approach to law
enforcement. His colleagues knew him as a steady leader who could always be counted
on during a crisis, whether it involved a fire hose or a shield.
Sean’s laughter and personality were larger than life, and if you were in the room, you
were automatically his friend—whether you liked it or not. A true Irishman at heart and a
diehard Notre Dame fan, he met every challenge with grit, humor, and a generosity that
seemed to have no limit. He never hesitated to lend a hand, share a story, or offer
support—he’d give you the shirt off his back and probably crack a joke while doing it.
Sean is survived by his beloved wife of 41 years, Joanne; his children Erin Spears
(LyBryant), Daniel; his grandson DJ; sisters Maureen Sobilo (David), Colleen Worrell;
niece Kelly Sobilo; nephews Sean Sobilo and Ryan Worrell; and a vast
brotherhood/sisterhood of firefighters and law enforcement officers. He was preceded in
death by parents David and Kathleen Worrell.
His courage, kindness, and booming laughter will echo in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
