Harry J. Gorta Jr., widely known as Joe, passed away peacefully on July 12, 2024. Born on March 3, 1933, in Miami, Florida, lived a life full of passion, dedication, and love.
Joe's early years were marked by his service as a Korean War veteran. Following his military service, he graduated from the University of Arizona in 1959. During his time at ASU, Joe’s charisma shined through as he hosted his own radio show, "The Harry Grant Show," and was the voice behind “Lucky Lager Dance Time.” He also hosted the TV show “Dance Time” on KOLD TV, showcasing his talent and charm.
Joe’s career was a testament to his dedication and skill. A proud member of Stagehands Local 1 for 58 years, he spent 25 years working on Broadway shows and 32 years at NBC. His claim to fame was his segment on The David Letterman Show, "Stagehand Theatre," where his wit and personality endeared him to audiences. Beyond his professional achievements, Joe was a man who truly loved the people around him. His family, co-workers, and anyone who had the pleasure of crossing paths with him were touched by his warmth and kindness. His love for life and for those he cared about was visable in everything he did.
Joe’s family was his pride and joy. He is survived by his beloved wife, Joan “Cookie” Gorta, his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son, Harry "Hal" Gorta, whose memory he cherished dearly.
The visitation for Harry J. Gorta Jr. will be held at Giove Funeral Home, 1000 Middle Country Rd, Selden, NY 11784, on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. The funeral will take place on Thursday, July 18, 2024, with the procession leaving the funeral home at 10:00 AM for Calverton National Cemetery, 210 Princeton Blvd, Calverton, NY.
Joe’s legacy of love, dedication, and passion will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him. His vibrant spirit and unforgettable contributions to his family and profession will be deeply missed.
