Elizabeth M. Rotella

September 8, 1956 — April 23, 2026

Middle Island

Elizabeth (Liz) Rotella (née Doherty), 69, of Middle Island, New York, passed away peacefully at home on April 23, 2026, beside her devoted husband of 46 years, Frank. She was blessed to spend her final months at home surrounded by love and support through in-home hospice care; frequent visits from her children, grandchildren, and siblings; and daily support from her home health aide, Carmen. Born in Brooklyn on September 8, 1956, to Frances and Richard Doherty, Elizabeth lived a life defined by compassion, humor, and unwavering devotion to her family. She had a gift for conversation and could talk to anyone at length, making people feel genuinely heard and cared for. Elizabeth shared a remarkable lifelong love story with her husband, Frank. High school sweethearts, they began their relationship in 1974, married in 1979, and spent over five decades side by side building a life centered on unconditional love, family, laughter, and resilience.

Liz attended Marist College before completing her degree at New York Institute of Technology in 1983. She began her career at the Federal Reserve Bank but chose to step away to raise her children, Mark and Leah, which reflected her deep commitment to family. As her children grew, she returned to work in various roles at schools (including at her children’s high school), reflecting her natural ability to teach and support others. She was a loving mother to Mark Rotella (Renae) and Leah Scognamiglio (John), and a proud grandmother to Reese, Ryan, and Emily. While her daughter-in-law, son-in-law, and grandchildren did not get to experience Liz at her best, they know just how deeply she loved spending time with family. And though never a “dog person,” Liz surprised everyone by finding comfort in her dog, Rosie, who remained faithfully by her side during her final three years. Elizabeth is also survived by her siblings Fran (Victor), Dave (Diane), Ray (Denise), and Vicki; her brother-in-law Michael (Jeanette); her sister-in-law Gerry (Pete); and nine cherished nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Frances and Richard; her mother- and father-in-law, Rose and Mike; and her brother-in-law, John.

Some of Liz’s happiest moments throughout adulthood were spent with her siblings, where laughter came easily and often. Known for her sharp wit and memorable laugh, Liz was the person her family turned to for advice. She created a home filled with warmth, making holidays and birthdays particularly special. Family trips to Fire Island, the Poconos, Disney, and camping brought lasting memories she cherished. Diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in the 1990s and later a battle with dementia, Liz faced life’s challenges with strength and resilience. Despite her illness, Liz’s spirit, humor, and love for her family remained constant. She was known to say, “It is what it is,” a mantra her family will carry forward. Elizabeth’s greatest legacy is the love she gave so freely. She will be remembered as a devoted wife, a caring and selfless mother and grandmother, and someone who made everyone around her feel valued. Her family takes great comfort in knowing she is at peace, though her presence will be missed ever
